Puerto Rico Surfing and Travel Information
I have been surfing in Puerto Rico for over twenty years and have a little bit of travel information that may be helpful for someone looking to take a Puerto Rico vacation. Puerto Rico, also known as PR can be accessed via San Juan International Airport, Ponce and Aquadilla. If you plan to surf the West side, fly direct from JFK (John F. Kennedy Airport in New York) to Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. The non-stop flights are offered daily and are usually available for under $300! I would recomend renting a car and brining a personal hadheld GPS. The GPS will just make life easier and less stressful while trying to find hard to find Puerto Rico beaches. When you rent your car, be sure to pay an extra dollar a day for the full coverage insurance. Puerto Rico has some interesting rules when it comes to driving; anything goes if you don't get caught. Also, if you plan on surfing any of the localized breaks, chances are your car will get vandalized and or broken into. There are some great surf camps in Rincon Puerto Rico on the north west side. It always tends to be crowded over there with Florida and New Jersey kids along with the locals, but it is a surf friendly area of the island that holds 2ft to triple over head waves.

The surf in Rincon Puerto Rico goes off. Look at the picture below to see the point firing on all cylinders. The rights have the potential to wrap around the entire point. If you can avoid all of the body boarders, urchins and locals...you could catch some great waves in Rincon Puero Rico!

Geography and Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is a beautiful island located south of Florida in the Atlantic Ocean. It is in the Caribbean located just north of the Virgin Islands to the west of Haiti and the Dominican Republic (La Hispanola). The waves in Puerto Rico are good. It has very deep water surrounding the 3,508 square miles which allows deep water swells to roll in virtually untouched by shallow water. The Puerto Rico Trench is about 75 miles to the north of Puerto Rico and is one of the deepest spots in the world. The Milwaukee Depth (apart of the Puerto Rico Trench) is over 27,400 feet deep, allowing swells to push in from the north and hit Puerto Rico's main reef breaks with some punch. The North Shores of Puerto Rico boast large open water swells hitting shallow urcin infested reefs. Crime can be high so hide your car key well!
Rincon located in North West Puerto Rico
I have been visiting Puerto Rico for over 20 years. I have seen lots of growth in this time. The Atlantic side of the corner (el rincon) is the windward side. The neighborhood is known as Puntas. Upon my first couple of visits there, I flew from JFK to Aguadilla (three hours) and drove the 25 minute drive through Aguada and into Rincon. Puntas, as the rest of Rincon, is covered with nice real estate nestled on the ridgelines of the steep hills facing the ocean. The valleys were overgrown and only inhabited by Pica Pica, stray dogs and the occasional rat. Most of these houses enjoy ocean views and the trade winds once they kick in after 10:00am. This past visit I discoverd that there are many ocean view lots available for sale and many developed beach front homes.
On the carribbean side of Rincon (corner) lies many new building projects and older homes gaining value every day. The real estate market on this side of the island has unbelievable growth potential. The neighborhoods are seperated into a few desirable areas including the harbor (home of Mitch's unbelievable restaraunt called "The Spot at the Black Eagle") and Pinapple Hill. There are many secluded ocean view lots and land for sale in Pinapple Hill.
Places to stay in Rincon Puerto Rico
There are many Puerto Rico style Inns and Bed and Breakfasts in Rincon Puerto Rico. I stayed at a place called The English Rose (La Rosa Inglesia) nestled in the hills of Ensenada Rincon Puerto Rico. The Inn keepers, Jethro and Ruth Wickenden, are very nice and run a tight ship. Call them to make reservations, they speak english and spanish (espanol), at 787-823-4032 and tell them you found their telephone number on stefanrest.com. Check out the picture of the Bed and Breakfast from their website below as well as a map of Rincon Puerto Rico with a "you are here" button on The English Rose location.

Even if you aren't looking for a place to stay in Rincon Puerto Rico because you already made reservations at La Rosa Inglesa you may have a hard time finding this place. If you have every been to Rincon to surf, you should definately know where Tres Palmes is. All the way through Puntas down the hill past Marias and towards downtown. Once you hit Tres Palmes there is a beach entrance on your right....go left instead. It is a narrow road with tropical vegitation growing over the sides of the road...but don't let that fool you. You are on the right path (literally). Head on up that road, you will pass Tres Palmes Estates (lots for sale) and hit a very steep section of road, just keep on cruising up. At the very top of the very steep part of the road the road will turn right...follow the road to the right for about another 250 yards and it will be on the right hand side. It only looks like a two story bed and breakfast but that is because the other two floors are flowing down the hillside into the beautiful valley. Don't let that worry you though, all of the rooms have ocean views. I hope the map above helps you out
Place to stay in North West Puerto Rico The English Rose
This tall narrow picture of The English Rose really allows me to show and describe how awesome this place is. The bottom floor, on the pool level, is where we stayed. There are two suites down there. The one to the left (you can only see one window) is an efficiancy style suite with a kitchenette. The one to the right (where Summer and I stayed) is a one bedroom apartment. It is very very clean and nicely decorated. It has an air conditioner in the bedroom that is powerful enough to cool the house but wasn't necesarry. Even in the summer (were were there in August) the breeze whips through the beautiful valley to the right of this picture. There is a couch (Queen size sofa bed), Satellite TV with FREE MOVIE CHANNELS, a kitchenette and a beautiful tranquil terrace with Caribbean side Atlantic Ocean views. The second floor in this picure is of The English Roses' two (2) bedroom suite. I didn't get a chance to look in there, but I can only imagine it would be great with how nice our suite was. The website shows two twin beds, two couches, kitchenette and gorgeous ocean views. The third floor of this epic little tranquil surf Bed and Breakfast is the English Rose breakfast serving traditional english style breakfasts as well as what us Americans are used to. OJ, Coffee, Bacon & Eggs, French Toast and the Dead Elvis (French Toast with bananas, honey and syrup...for four bucks).
