Benjamin Stewart Virkstis

I hate moving. Moving is the biggest pain in the ass...boxes, plants, fragile glass, backbreaking Television's...but this is the life of a renter. So if you rent, you know the feeling...

I am throwing everything away that I don't need and I came across something that I figured I should archive electronically on this blog. It is a great Hopi Prayer for my best childhood friend who passed away 2 years ago. His name is Benjamin Stewart Virkstis:

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glint in the snow,

I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle summer rain.

When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there. I did not die.

It moves me everytime I read it.

I just heard this Bruddah Iz song on YouTube. I felt it would be appropriate to post here.

A beautiful song to go along with a beautiful prayer.

That really is an amazing poem (or thought, even). Did Benjamin write it?

No, Benjamin didn't write this, it is a Hopi Prayer that was a part of his eulogy at his funeral. It is printed on the handout everyone got that attended his funeral. The handout was one of the items I threw away while packing...that is why I put it here for everyone to read.
